South Africa has addressed the United Nations Security Council on the ongoing situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling for urgent international action and a just resolution to the conflict.
In its statement, South Africa reiterated that lasting peace in the Middle East depends on the realization of a two-state solution, with Israel and a sovereign Palestinian state existing side-by-side. The address highlighted ongoing ceasefire violations in Gaza, raising serious concerns about continued civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis affecting displaced populations.
The South African representative emphasized the need for immediate, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, warning that the situation on the ground remains catastrophic despite ceasefire commitments. Concerns were also raised about developments in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as actions impacting the operations of UN agencies.
South Africa urged the international community and UN member states to take concrete and irreversible steps to end the unlawful occupation and support the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination in line with international law.
